Joe Ligo is an author and a producer of the 2025 PBS Series, The Last American Automaker. The six-part documentary series detailed the rise and fall of the American Motors Corporation (AMC). Now Joe brings his insight and expertise to America’s Transportation Experience/AACA Museum, Inc. for a live on-site presentation. Join us at the Museum on Thursday, October 8th, at 7:00 p.m.
American Motors Corporation (AMC) was formed in 1954 by merging Nash-Kelvinator and the Hudson Motor Car Company, aiming to compete with Detroit’s Big Three automakers. Under George Romney, AMC focused on producing compact, fuel-efficient cars like the Rambler. Known for innovation despite limited resources, AMC introduced niche vehicles, muscle cars such as the Javelin and AMX, and pioneered four-wheel-drive passenger cars like the AMC Eagle. Financial difficulties, regulatory challenges, and a sequence of partnerships and buyouts—ultimately involving Renault and Chrysler—led to AMC’s end.
